ThunderBug was named 2026 NHL Mascot of the Year, which feels correct and also slightly concerning for the rest of the league.

The Lightning mascot earned the honor for community impact, social media, in-game entertainment and overall performance. He made 370+ community appearances this season and even arrived by helicopter before the Stanley Cup Playoffs, because walking in would have been too normal.

He’s been hyping Tampa Bay since 1992.

The NHL has officially caught up.

The old UPC Insurance headquarters at 800 2nd Avenue South is officially history, and what comes next is not exactly subtle.

The plan: two 31-story towers, 824 apartments, 30,000+ square feet of retail, and 1,550 parking spaces. Price tag: $225 million. Tower one is expected in 2029, with tower two following in 2031.

So yes, another major piece of downtown St. Pete is about to look completely different.

If you drove past 34th Street wondering what happened to the Rand Motel, here’s the answer: it’s permanently closed, and the building has been demolished.

The property sold for $1.2 million in 2024, followed by a commercial demolition permit that was finalized that November.

So yes, the motel known for hot tubs, mirrored ceilings and decades of very specific St. Pete lore is officially history.

That was not a normal Friday night at the Trop.

The Rays beat the Astros 3-1 on Sept. 11 and became the first team in Major League Baseball to clinch a 2026 postseason spot.

With the game tied 1-1, Junior Caminero crushed a two-run walk-off homer to send the Trop into chaos and officially punch Tampa Bay’s ticket to October. After missing the playoffs the last two seasons, the Rays are officially back.

Apparently “Back in the Burg” was not just a marketing campaign.
